Client Feature: Mariluz

When Mariluz started working with Compass in 2014, she had a lot of goals. She wanted to save money, buy a home for herself and her children, and work towards growing her own small business. At the time, Mariluz worked at her regular job as a Maintenance Supervisor at a car dealership, and also worked weekends through her own small cleaning business. During her time with Compass, Mariluz took control of her finances and began to see a clear path to her goals. She had always been organized and a planner, but now she had more confidence and knew what she needed to do. Before long, Mariluz’s weekend business was more than just a weekend business. She was working weekday evenings as well, paying a small team of employees out of her earnings, saving, and setting aside money to pay her quarterly taxes. She began talking to her boss about a contract for her business to do all the maintenance for his car dealerships. Even while she continued to pursue her goal of homeownership, she also planned and pushed for the success of her small business. After working with SCORE to put together a business plan and budget to present to her boss, Mariluz was offered a full contract to maintain his car dealerships across multiple locations in the Boston area. She put a lot of work into organizing the logistics, from creating a payroll to purchasing a van for her business, and saw things begin to fall into place. She now has nine employees, and although she sometimes works long hours, she knows she is working for herself and working toward her dreams. Mariluz’s confidence has grown over the past few years as she has gotten closer to her goals. Now that her business is thriving, she wants to turn her attention to becoming a homeowner. She wants to show her children that all of this is possible. As Mariluz told her Compass coach, “When you have a goal and you reach it you feel like you can do anything. There are no limits to what you can do.”
