Will you or your child be enrolled in college during the 2017-2018 school year? If so, then a new change allows you to complete the FAFSA application as early as October 1st.
The new open date allows the FAFSA application to coordinate better with the college application timeline. An earlier FAFSA application will allow students to better compare their financial aid options. What is the FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid. This form must be completed each year to apply for federal financial aid, which can include grants, loans, and the Federal Work Study program.
When should students complete the FAFSA application?
Students must file the FAFSA each year that they hope to be considered for Federal Aid. File your FAFSA as soon as the application opens. In addition to considering your financial need, some aid is awarded based on the available funds at the time that you apply. This means that delaying your FAFSA application can result in you or your child qualifying for less aid.
Students should be mindful of both their state and school’s FAFSA deadline. Learn more about your state deadline: https://fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm#.
