Overwhelmed & Overdue: Addressing Troublesome Debt in Black Communities
Troublesome debt (e.g. high interest loans, past-due bills, criminal justice debt) can present significant barriers to the financial prosperity of low- and moderate-income (LMI) Black families. With support from MetLife Foundation, Prosperity Now collaborated with three community-based organizations—along with expert advisors and varied stakeholders—to understand what community members need to address troublesome debt.
Join this engaging webinar for research updates and preliminary findings on troublesome debt in LMI Black communities. We’ll discuss insights from community member interviews with leaders from our local nonprofit partners. We’ll also explore knowledge, behavioral and structural barriers complicating debt for LMI Black communities. We’ll share implications and recommendations for practitioners and policymakers at the local, state and federal levels. In addition, we’ll create space to think creatively together about addressing barriers and gaps in services for LMI Black communities overwhelmed by troublesome debt.
